A magnificent historic event venue
18 June 2018
The Mercure Leicester The Grand Hotel is steeped in history. A Grade II listed Victorian building the hotel boasts a strong past. Central to this is the Kings Hall, a remarkable event setting which can cater for up to 350 guests.
Originally built in 1898, the hotel has undergone a few transformations over the years, whilst keeping true to its heritage. During the early 1900s an area on the first floor of The Grand housed The Kings Hall Cinema.
The Kings Hall was the brainchild of Orson Wright, a businessman from Wigston, who envisaged the ornate gilt capped columns, and extravagant use of decorative marble. His vision was completed with the help of architect Amis Hall. Over the years the lavish Kings Hall has held thousands of banquets, receptions, and company awards.
Famous names and faces have visited the hotel over the years, including Winston Churchill who visited in 1909. Politicians, sporting heroes and actors have been welcomed to the hotel. Recently the Kings Hall was used as a backdrop for a Bollywood film due to be released in August this year.
A customer recently sent through an image of her father, and the menu for an event he attended in the Kings Hall in 1931. At the hotel we enjoy hearing stories from customers about relatives who used to visit the hotel. Amy Johnson, the famous aviator who was the first female English pilot to fly solo from Britain to Australia, attended Leicester’s Aero Club’s 2nd annual ball in the Kings Hall in 1932.
Centrally based in the heart of Leicester, the hotel has its own private car park, and plenty of rooms for overnight accommodation. With a choice of different menu options we can cater for your event, whether you’re looking for a formal six course meal to a more relaxed dining option.
Whether you’re looking for an event venue to hold your company awards, wedding celebration, a film location, or even a boxing event, make your own history within the splendid grandeur of the Kings Hall at the Mercure Leicester The Grand Hotel.
